Child Contact Centres

These centres aim to help maintain and build relationships between children and their non-resident parents in a structured and supportive setting.

About our contact centres

Our child contact centres based in Bodmin, Dursley, Plymouth and Swindon are safe, neutral places where children from separated families can spend time with one or both parents and sometimes other family members. These centres provide a child friendly environment with toys, games and facilities that cater to the diverse needs of the children affected by family breakdowns.

What does a typical shift look like?

A typical shift for a child contact centre worker can be quite varied and involves several key responsibilities. Here’s an overview of what a typical day might look like:

Facilitating and supervising visits between children and their non-residential parents or family members.  Ensuring that the interactions are positive and safe, and stepping in if any issues arise.  Keeping detailed records of each visit, noting any significant interactions or concerns.  Offering emotional support to children who may be experiencing stress or anxiety.  Coordinating with social workers, legal representatives, and other professionals involved in the child’s care.  Communicating with parents and caregivers to schedule visits and discuss any concerns.

Specialist training

Our contact supervisors undergo a rigorous training programme. They must successfully complete NACCC accredited training, in addition to in house training and online training in key areas such as:

Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities and mental health Understanding these conditions and how they impact the children, and their families is key to be able to provide the best outcomes for our children and their families.   Information governance, GDPR, record keeping As with all health and social care professionals contact supervisors must be aware of when, where, and how to store confidential documents. Learning this knowledge is key to ensuring that data breaches do not occur, this also supports lay boundaries between family members.   Medical and medication training Contact supervisors work with children who have varying health needs, so it's essential they are aware of any illness or disease the child may have. Supervisors complete in-house first aid and manual handling training, equipping them to respond to emergencies effectively. Additionally, they must complete online first aid modules covering conditions like diabetes and epilepsy. Staff also receive specialist training in conflict resolution and MAAPA.

Progression opportunities

The role of a support worker in a children’s contact centre is both rewarding and varied.

Senior Roles

With experience and training, there are opportunities to advance into more senior positions, which could involve coordinating shifts and ensuring the smooth operation of the contact centre.

Health and Social Care Diploma opportunities

Once staff complete their probationary period, they can enrol in a fully funded Health and Social Care Diploma. Working with our dedicated assessors and training partner, staff gain practical experience and tailored support to develop their skills further. This qualification, alongside hands-on training and guidance from our in-house trainers, opens the door to career progression in specialized roles like live-in care, complex care, and children’s services, or ensuring the highest quality of care is provided to those with learning disabilities.

A challenging role but rewrarding, the help and support the team gave was second to none

I took on this role as a change from being a care assistant. With the training I received it enabled me to quickly take up the role and add value

An enjoyable role but can be difficult, you need to build resilience and a calm attitude
